What Makes a Business Card Print-Ready?

Print5 min read

Print-ready is less about decoration and more about constraints: size, margins, contrast, registration, and a PDF that survives production.

Use the final trim size from the beginning

A card built at the wrong size will always need repair later. Standard US cards are 2 by 3.5 inches. European cards are commonly 85 by 55 millimeters. Pick the target format before judging layout, type scale, or spacing.

Designing directly at trim size makes the tradeoffs visible. A name that feels elegant on a screen can become cramped once it is actually a few inches wide.

Keep important content away from the edge

Commercial cutting is precise, but it is not theoretical. Small drift happens. Names, email addresses, QR codes, and thin borders should sit inside a safe area so the card still looks intentional after trimming.

Full-bleed backgrounds can run to the edge. Critical information should not.

Prepare artwork the printer can use

Production artwork should preserve text and vector details where possible. QR codes are especially sensitive: low-resolution raster codes can scan poorly once compressed or printed on textured stock.

Before approving a run, check a proof at real size. If the smallest text requires effort on screen, it will be worse under office lighting on matte stock.
